Top 10/2011 What a year! It’s been such an eventful one that I’ve decided to compile a list of the ten standout memories so I’ll always remember where I was in my life throughout 2011. These are in no particular order and this does not include all of the amazing day-to-day moments I’ve had with close friends and family. Consider this a “highlights reel” with good times I’d like to share.
Getting to meet and interview Stephen King - He’s been one of my favorite writers since childhood.
Celebrating Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico - I’ve always been fascinated by the tradition and the art, so it was nice to cross that off of the bucket list.
San Diego Comic-Con – Always a great time with an incredible crew. I enjoyed talking to Nicolas Cage, Danny DeVito, Mike Judge, Stan Lee, Aziz Ansari, Carey Mulligan, Elijah Wood and so many other talented people.
The Grammys - A yearly tradition with great friends and memorable red carpet and afterparty moments that we always laugh about long after we get home.
The World Series/Dude Soup/Club Piranha - It’s so good to see one of my friends get to play in the World Series and go on to bigger and better things after a fun summer of shenanigans and pool parties.
Larry Hagman returns to Dallas - After several years of getting to know such a great man filled with years of great stories and wisdom, it was nice to have “J.R.” return “home”. Good times at Earth Day Dallas, Dallas International Film Festival, Santa Monica and Ojai before all of that as well.
Running a half-marathon – It might have been one of the stupidest things I’ve ever done: 13.1 miles with no training, no stretching, poor nutrition and a lack of sleep, but I did it – and didn’t even end up in last place! This was followed by the Warrior Dash, which was a breeze at 3 miles – mud, barbed wire, obstacles and all.
World exploration – How did I follow up Peru, Colombia, Cayman Islands and Puerto Vallarta from last year? With trips to Barbados, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico, Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Mardi Gras, Cozumel and Maui this year. All unforgettable – and plenty of great time on the beach!
The Austin files – Between SXSW, Austin City Limits and Fantastic Fest and other one-offs (including the Spy Kids premiere), I started to consider Austin a second home.
Work, work, work – With random editing gigs for four publications, writing jobs for four others and an in-house corporate writing stint, I got to try out a lot of situations and have come to realize what I want professionally more so now than ever before. 2012 will be a much better year for it.
Sorry my updates are so sporadic. It seems like I’m writing morning, noon and night, so by the time I’m done for the day (or night), the last thing I want to do is write about myself. I update my personal and professional updates on Facebook and on Twitter (@paulsalfen). Maybe I should look into a feed here so it doesn’t look like I have the inability to blog. That can’t be good for business, right?
The best way to reach me is via e-mail: paul@paulsalfen.com. If you’re a social networker, find me on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Foursquare. Well, and Google+ I suppose, but I’m not on that one too much. Got any others? I might as well make myself as accessible as possible, right?
Newer features were added to the portfolio section that include interviews with Elizabeth Olsen and Sean Durkin for Martha Marcy May Marlene and actress/musician/clothing designer Taryn Manning as well as travel articles on Maui and Cozumel. More soon!
